Surgeons of Lahore organized an association in the early 50’s to discuss and share their clinical and operative experience with their colleagues. Anesthetists, Pathologists and radiologists were made associate members of that body of surgeons called association of surgeons of Lahore.

In early 80’s this association was revived under the convenorship of Prof. Bashir Ahmad, one of the life members of the past association of surgeons of Lahore. An election was conducted after a membership drive and professor Ijaz Ahsan was elected as president, professor Riaz Ahsan Siddique as general secretary and Dr. Saeed Choudhary as finance secretary. The association organized a few clinical meetings but because of the diverse background of its members including surgeons from all the specialties this association did not continue its activities.

On 24th October 1984 Prof. S.A.R. Gardezi convened a meeting of General Surgeons from all the Teaching Institute of Lahore and talked about the need of a forum for Surgeons in Lahore under the umbrella of Society of Surgeons. He appraised participants about Society of Surgeons in Karachi, which had regular clinical meetings and floated the idea of having a similar character of Society of Surgeons of Pakistan with independent chapter in each center where more than 10 members are present.

A Meeting was arranged in the committee room of King Edward Medical College. About 40 surgeons from various hospitals of Lahore attended this meeting of the Society. Prof. Rashid , Prof. Masood Ahmed, Prof. S. Zafar Haider, Prof. Ehsanullah, Prof. Zafarullah Ch., Dr Jahangir Alam, Col. M.A. Cheema, Prof. Muhammad Rafi, Dr. Abdul Majeed Choudhary were among those who attended the meeting. The Society got itself registered after approving the provisional constitution.

The first election of Society was held in 1985. The following were elected as officer bearers:- Professor Rashid Ahmad Qureshi was the founding President: Dr. Abdul Majeed Choudhary Gerneral Secretary: Dr. Mazhar Saeed Choudhary Finance Secretary. Since then regular monthly, fortnightly and even thrice month clinical meeting have been held, annual and an international conference is held on alternate Year. Officer bearers change every two years by holding free, fair and transparent democratically held elections.
